Slant Magazine: The Year in Film 2008

This year, I was asked to contribute a top-ten list to Slant Magazine's Year in Film feature, along with Ed Gonzalez, Nick Schager (who also offer brief annotations) and Bill Weber. Click on the link and scroll down to see my selections, headed by Jacques Rivette's incomparable The Duchess of Langeais.

I'm so glad to see Rivette's latest topping a list; it'd top mine too, for sure. What an amazing film.

Yes, it'd be nice to see more critics putting Duchess at the top of their rankings, although Glenn Kenny's done just that.

Will we be seeing a list from you?

I don't know if I've really seen enough this year to justify a list; I've been very selective in my theatrical viewings. If I made one, Don't Touch the Axe and Vicky Cristina Barcelona would certainly be the top two, though.
